Cherish the day: Artistic Children’s Portraits in Sydney
On this day, we went to a local park. You wanted to show me how you can now ride your bicycle on the skateboard ramp. You are very proud of your achievement of riding your bike without training wheels. It has been the highlight of your summer. You asked for your training wheels to be removed, and you have spent many sunny days practising and getting it right. I stood watching you and thinking how we reach these milestones when we are ready. Sometimes it is early, sometimes later than your siblings but you can now tick this milestone.
I stood watching and thinking about my own photography journey. How I have spent the last three years ticking the milestones of learning techniques and getting it right in camera. I had this sense of wanting to take off my own training wheels, and to express how I see the world. To move from the basics to creating my art. And on this bright, hot summer’s day, it felt right to step outside what is technically correct. I played with the shutter speed, blew out the highlights, and blurred the images. I played with shadows, lines, and circles. I created images using techniques that I have spent the last three years learning not to do. I created images of you in an everyday moment, and we celebrated life without training wheels with the wind in our hair.
